Originaire de Mazamet (Tarn), François Girbaud est d’emblée initié ;

Like denim, leather lends itself to a thousand transformations:
washed, twisted, scraped, pleated, coloured, waxed, reinforced, scored, lasered.
Like denim, the appearance of this noble, natural, living material improves with time.
Originally from Mazamet (Tarn), a renowned centre for wool pulling and hides and skins,
François Girbaud learned how to work with skins from an early age.
He finds it natural to work with this material and he has a great fondness for it.
The title of his book
Ma Peau (My Skin) appeared in 2005 alludes to this.

As early as 1975, the Compagnie des Montagnes et des Forêts line
was aimed at the top-of-the-range Made in France market.
In the 80s, Marithé and François Girbaud teamed up with Italian manufacturer Ruffo
to continue their experiments on both the  cutting and treatment fronts.

Since 2001, the brand has re-launched leather
using techniques and effects developed for textiles.
Above all, it has gone back to the authenticity of leather as a skin.

Defects, wrinkles and scars are finished, neglected parts highlighted
and worn effects amplified as distinctive signs of the brand.

Jean-Luc Godard also directed the video for their fashion show SS 1988, On s’est tous défilé which was shown at the brand new Vidéothèque de Paris open in the Halles for a special evening on March 20th.

He refused the invitation to the Grand Ball Girbaud-Godard
that was given for the occasion, hoping to present a larger choice of films:
“I refuse to gather all of my poor films for the ball honoring your rich costumes.”

Closed Jean
Deuxième série de 7 spots intitulés :

Métamorphojean
Troisième série de 5 spots intitulés :
L’Art / La Guerre / La Beauté / L’Amour / Le Cinéma
1990 • 01’40’’

For this unique experience of broadcast campaign
ordered by the brand, Marithé+François Girbaud
refuses the American symbols " sex and rock n roll "
which advertising agencies impose on the jeans
and wish to investigate a poetic vision.

In 1987, they ask to the director Jean-Luc Godard
who lends himself exceptionally to the exercise in a radical way.
His style is immediately recognizable:
Collage, quotations, tributes in the maitres of the painting,
the literature, the poetry and the music.

François Girbaud is a big collector-and fan- of comic books.
When he worked at Western House,
Claire Bretécher, Marcel Gotlib and Nikita Mandryka (The masked Cucumber)
made sketches for T-shirts that sold in the shop.

They remained good friends: for the summer 76 press release
for Matricule 11342,

Gotlib sketched Superdupont in Quatre Poches jeans.

Before being an air and light poster, the picture of Steve Hiett
is an advertising campaign of the summer 2010 which does not aim to be so sky blue…
The inversion of the visual codes of bases forces the spectator unconsciously to rectify the image.
The air and the water, "blue gold", confront with desert soils to denounce a certain madness!
Exactly entitled "The world is crazy",
this campaign extends the previous campaigns named "There is no more season…"
As for clothes, the cuttings fall out and become confused, the trompe l’œil do not deceive the comfort.
The laser fixes the abrasion, the laces as the male attributes of the Greek statues…

Production : Christian Blanchas / CBSTV production07’54’’

Inspired by Leonardo de Vinci’s painting, The Last Supper (1498),
this SS 2005 advertisement caused a scandal...
with the Catholic Church calling for it to be censored.
The Supreme Court of Appeals quashed the Paris Court’s decision,
judging that there was neither insult nor offense toward Catholics.
The famous program Culture Pub realize a subject on the genesis of this advertising campaign.

When the laser gets in touch with the denim
to bite its on-surface fabric:  a flame forms,
a smoke gets free, dusts are taken in a bright trap.
The visitors of Labos (during the Biennale Internationale Design 2013)
were allowed bewitch by the fascinating powers of this incandescent light.

This is a rare document (and sincere)
appeared in
La Dépêche du Midi, in June 29th, 1972.

“Instructions for fading jeans (the ‘past’ is the future). If
faith can move mountains, then there is no reason why it
can’t fade jeans. Instructions: Take a basin, fill it with three
quarts of salt water, one quart of river water, one quart of
quart d’heure (F. Girbaud’s famous puns)
, but only one third of
rock salt and a few drops of bleach: Squeeze the juice of one
lime, that you first cut in half to make it easier to juice. Wait
until the product soit dissous (attention, à partir du 17 juillet
. At the
same time, simmer over a low heat a pot full of rivets, studs,
rhinestones, badges, stars, etc. Gently pick up the clothing
between your thumbs and index fingers, jeans fabric is quite
stubborn so we suggest that you whistle innocently with
your back to the basin . . . and then suddenly turn around
to take the garment by surprise and plunge it into the water;
hold it there firmly and mercilessly for a few minutes until it
stops struggling. When the last bubbles have burst, the actual
fading begins. The choice of the real end color is quite
special, so we leave it up to your imagination as to what happens
next, and to chlore (pun again), we wish you good luck.
P.S.: Don’t forget to turn off the heat under the pot.”
